DIRECTORS STATEMENT

In making EASY, I wanted to explore romantic life without romanticizing it. I always loved romantic comedies (from the 40's mostly), but I also always loved movies that were relentlessly truthful (Cassavetes is one of my favorites). With EASY I tried to put those two things together.

My other big influence was the French New Wave. I was raised on "Breathless," "Claire's Knee," "Jules and Jim." When "The Mother and the Whore" played for a week, I went every other night. These were all movies about relationships, about how hard it is to have them. Not that I needed movies to tell me that.

With EASY, my life and my love of movies came together in a way that they hadn't before. I'd finally gotten into a good relationship, so now I could make a film about how much I had to struggle to get there. At least, that's what I think the film's about.
